How Many Calories Do You Burn During Sex?
For all the people out there who are interested in burning calories, whether you’re interested in sports or not or if you hate cardio or not, then what we’ll explain to you here below will surely interest you.
Why, you might ask. Well, for two fundamental reasons:
- We’re going to tell you that sex can actually impact your metabolism and increase the burning of calories
- We’re going to compare it with the calories burned during sport
Maybe cardio doesn’t have to be so boring after all… What do you think?
1. Kissing
Some researchers claim that you can actually burn between 68 and 460 calories per hour by kissing. Is that really possible? Well, so says science. We haven’t actually managed to repeat this scientific research fully in order to measure our results, so we take it with a pinch of salt. But if that’s true, then that could correspond to running for 15-30 minutes. Yes, it definitely depends on how fast you run.
So, what the science says. If you’re all relaxed and kissing romantically then you could in fact burn around 70 calories per hour. And if you’re a getting little bit intense and excited then vigorous kisses could burn around 90 calories per hour, according to Jaiya Kinzbach, an LA-based sexologist which is most famous for her book Red Hot Touch. That’s not too bad!
However, if we start making-out intensely (with clothes on) we could in fact get the number of calories up to 460 per hour. No joke! A making-out session like that will accelerate your breathing and heart-rate, which is, per se, a perfect way to burn calories. The best way to maximise it is of course to keep it hotter and sweatier.
See?! Time to ditch that treadmill in the morning and spend time in bed kissing!
2. Hand-job
It’ll burn between 100 and 200 calories per hour. Of course, it depends on your technique and how energetic the hand-job really is. You can definitely intensify it by complementing it with kisses, erotic strokes, and body movements.
An hour-long leisurely bike ride for about 16-20 km burns about 256 calories. It’s almost the same, so we wouldn’t have much trouble deciding which calorie-burning method we’d choose here.
3. Giving oral sex
That’s 200 calories per hour according to Elisa at Cosmopolitan. But it’s definitely related to adding sensual body movements to excite your partner and yourself. It probably all depends on the intensity, but you get the picture. If you’re super enthusiastic you could add some push-ups to add more calories. But then again, an hour downtown? Nobody’s got time for that and your guy won’t probably make it hanging out in the wild for that long.
Nevertheless, 200 calories per hour is what you’ll burn playing golf for 1 hour, according to Lance Cummings, training director at SEALFit Training Center in California. Obviously, with this information, you know what to do instead when someone suggests playing golf.
4. Actual sex
Clearly this depends on multiple factors. It obviously depends on the position you choose, and, more importantly, duration.
Important scientists with important jobs have estimated that 20-minute session burns around 200 calories on average. That’s definitely not bad! But it’s of course not the same taking a relaxing missionary vs intense acrobatic experiment. Also, we just got a word from India that if you use time-tested tantric techniques which allow you to prolong the pleasure and duration of sex for up to 60 minutes, then you could in fact be reaching 600 calories. That’s about as much as a vigorous spinning class! If you’d ask us here at Room Privée, we’d definitely be skipping that spinning and aim for tantra all day long.
5. The orgasm
With each orgasm we burn about 30 calories. But if you’re faking it, you could actually be burning more. Don’t ask how the important scientist found that out. However, faking it is technically lying, and lying is not nice. Instead, tell you partner how you want it and you’ll be screaming of pleasure. And screaming does also burn calories, so it’s sort of 2 for 1.
If you’re curious how many calories you burn during sex, there is actually a calculator for that specifically. No joke! See here.
Although, for losing weight and general well-being, we do recommend that people aim for balanced diet and a good workout routine that suit their physical abilities and goals. However, sex could definitely be defined as some sort of sport and should therefore be part of your workout routine. Let the games begin!
